The Tipping Point... The what?
(Sunday, February 3, 2008)
No, it's not that point after your delicious meal when the food starts churning up inside because you have to crunch numbers to figure out how much more money you need to dig out of your wallet. And no, it's not that point in an intense game of 21 basketball where you have the opportunity to send your opponent back to zero points. But wait, I think I got it: the point at which something is pushed over the edge. Well, kind of.
The tipping point is the "one dramatic moment in an epidemic when everything can change all at once" (9). Malcom explains the historical popularity of the Hush Puppies product line to explain what kind of minor changes can impact a brand so greatly. At first glance, it seemed like Malcom was going to further pursue the concept of viral marketing and how trends are picked up through social interaction. I soon realized he was looking at the bigger picture: "Small things can make a big difference" (front cover). Even just a handful of people can bring about change, as long as they are the right people. Malcom introduces a handful of situations that are ready to tip, which will be further explained in the coming chapters, so with the definition of "the tipping point" in mind, hopefully we can gain a better understanding of how this phenomenon works as the book progresses.
